Previously on Hand aufs Herz

Bea and Jens talking....

Bea: Jens, I'm under suspicion of murder! I'm not allowed to teach anymore. I might have to go to prison for 20 years. I want all of this to finally be over.

Mirbach: Yes, I want that too. That's why I'm here. I know who killed Franziska.

Sophie: You stupid pig! You promised. We had a deal.

At the Klein home….

Mirbach: I need 80.000.

Frau Klein: It's over, Herr Mirbach. I won't let myself be blackmailed by you any longer.

Sophie: The only solution is to give him the money, so he'll take off again. But now he's gone and you destroyed everything!

Outside in the Pestalozzi school yard…

Luzi: God, she can't do that.

Michael: Sophie, come over here and ... we can talk calmly about everything.

Sophie: Just leave me alone. I'm serious!

Intro

[Pestalozzi, school yard]

Michael: Sophie...everything will be fine. I can help you. Don't worry, I'll stay here. I really just want to talk to you.

Sophie: But I don't want to talk to you.

Götting: If she jumps I'm dead.

Michael: What has happened?

[Flashback]

Timo: I let you sleep at my place...because you were doing really crappy, and because I wanted to help you. But I'm together with Luzi now and I love her. Get that into your head!

Jens: You’ve been covering up for years that your husband killed Franziska Lohmann. You’ll go to prison.

Frau Klein: You aren’t getting any more money from me!

Sophie: Mama…

[/Flashback]

Timo: Sophie! Don't do something stupid! We can talk about everything.

One student is taping the whole thing with his phone. Jenny notices and yanks/slaps his arm down

Jenny: Hey! Stop that!

He obeys. Of course.

Michael: Sophie...

Sophie: Go away or I'll jump.

Michael: That won’t do you any good.

Sophie: It will. Then everything will simply be over.

Michael: It won't be. This scaffolding is much too low. If you jump now, the most you'll be is quadriplegic; that won't solve any of your problems.

Sophie stares disbelievingly at Michael.

Sophie: What do you want!?!

Michael: I want for us to get down from here together...and calmly talk about everything.

Sophie hesitates and Michael lunges forward, grabs her and pulls her into his arms.

Michael: Everything's alright. (looking down) Oh god. I've got you.

A little later, they're down and Sophie is strapped on a stretcher being wheeled to an ambulance.

Timo: How is she?

Michael: She's in shock.

Frau Klein comes running.

Frau Klein: I'm her mother.

Michael: I'll handle this. Frau Klein. Frau Klein, come here.

Frau Klein: What happened? I got a call that she...

Michael: Your daughter is fine. She will be taken to the hospital and examined, but it's probably only shock.

Frau Klein: Did she say anything?

Michael: Like what? Frau Klein...you can go to your daughter in a moment but first I would like to talk to you. Your daughter stood up there on that scaffold just now and threatened to jump. Can you tell me why? Frau Klein!

Frau Klein: That's none of your business. Sophie is my daughter and you have no right to interfere in our lives so...leave us alone. (to the ambulance guy) Can I go with you?

Paramedic: Yes….

[Pestalozzi, Götting's office]

Götting: This is the first time I have to thank Heisig.

Alexandra: For?

Götting: If Klein had jumped...it would have been the lead story tomorrow in the local pages, at least. You know how journalists are. They would have linked it to the strike and I would have had an investigation on my hands.

Alexandra: You mean the only thing you're thinking about…. is your job?

Götting: Excuse me?

Alexandra: Did you ever ask yourself why Sophie wanted to jump off the roof?

Götting: Pfff...how should I know? Puberty depression or she's got her period. There's no way of telling.

Alexandra: She testified against Bea, but maybe that wasn't the whole truth.

Götting: Be glad that she gave the statement...or else Vogel would still be a teacher here.

Alexandra: I'm not complaining...but Sophie knows more. Something about Franziska's murder. I have no idea why but…. I get the feeling that whatever she knows...isn't good.

[Prison, visitation room]

Bea is sitting at the table when a guard/policeman and Michael come in.

Bea: Hey.

They move to hug each other.

Guard: No physical contact.

(Not delivered as disdainfully as by Screw Ratched but I'll take it.)

Michael: How are you?

Bea: Fine. The TV program is getting on my nerves a little.

(I know! I mean here we are, already 6 minutes into the show and all we have seen of Jemma so far was Jenny effortlessly bitch-slapping some extra.)

Bea: Any news about Jens?

Michael: Unfortunately no. But...more and more, I get the feeling that the Kleins know something. Since the murder came to light those two have been acting strangely. Very strangely.

Bea: Why?

Michael: Sophie tried to kill herself.

Bea: What?!

Michael: Yes, but nothing happened. Thank god.

Bea: Why did she do that?

Michael: I'm wondering that myself.

Bea: I don't get it. Why did Sophie go to Australia to get Jens? Why did she testify against me? And why did she try to kill herself now?

Michael: Bea, I don't know either. But one thing is certain. Sophie and her mother know more than they are saying.

Bea: What do you plan to do now?

Michael: I'll go to Frau Klein and find out what she knows.

Bea: Even if she knows something, she won't tell you.

Michael: That may be, but I don't care if I get the truth from Jens or from Frau Klein. But the fact is that there is a connection.

Bea: I love you.

Michael: I love you too. And I'll get you out of here.

[Beschenko home]

Luzi and Ben are sitting at the kitchen table.Ben is staring at Luzi, visibly annoyed.

Karin: Good morning you two.

Ben: I'm off to school.

Karin: What's up with Ben?

Luzi: No idea. He'll tell you sometime anyway. Okay...I let Götting buy me and convinced the others... to end this stupid strike.

Karin: Excuse me!?!

Luzi: You said yourself that I shouldn't provoke my teachers and ... that I should think about my future...and all that crap. So that's what I did. God, and I have never felt this shitty.

Karin: Hey.

[Klein home]

Frau Klein: Herr Heisig, I really don't have time right now.

She tries to close the door but Michael pushes it open again and enters the house.

Michael: I don't care. Listen to me, Frau Klein. Yesterday I prevented your daughter from taking her own life, and half an hour ago I was with my girlfriend Bea Vogel who is wrongly sitting in jail awaiting trial. And believe me, because of that I'm in a very bad mood. And when I'm in a bad mood I get insufferable. (That doesn't have anything to do with your mood really.) So if you don't want my mood to get even worse...you'll listen carefully to me now. I'll be brief. Where's Jens Mirbach?

Frau Klein: I don't know what you're talking about.

Michael: You know very well who I'm talking about. I'm talking about the only person who can attest to Bea Vogel being innocent. And I know that he is in Cologne, and I know that you were in contact with him! So stop trying to make excuses and tell me where Jens Mirbach is!

[Beschenko home]

Karin: To Liverpool. I thought you didn't want to go there anymore.

Luzi: I thought I would never be able to go there because you need the right contacts to get accepted. But in any case, it’s better than staying here, and if Götting writes me a letter of recommendation maybe they'll accept me.

Karin: And what about your friends?

Luzi: What friends? Timo had better leave me alone. He just lies to my face all the time.

Karin: And what of Ben?

Luzi: Ben... Ben has been playing the pal this whole time, being all "we'll tell each other everything and we can trust each other"... and then he secretly sleeps with Vogel. I trusted them. And they...ah never mind. They all suck.

Karin: Yes, but that's no reason to stab everyone in the back. I know what I said about the strike in the beginning...but essentially you guys were right. What Götting is doing with the school, that's just not acceptable!! Something has to be done about it.

Luzi: It wouldn't have done any good, anyway. Sophie wanted to jump from the roof of the school…because of all this crap with Timo. It's all my fault

.

Karin: Luzi...

Luzi: I wanted to be with Timo so badly, I didn't give a damn about Sophie's feelings.

Karin: Luzi, stop that. That's utter nonsense and you know it. It's just all too much at the moment. But that's not your fault for sure. Come here.

Karin hugs her daughter tight.

[Pestalozzi, Götting's office]

Götting: Herr Dr. Wendtland, have a seat. What brings you to my office?

Dr. Wendtland: The things I've been hearing about this school since you became principal. And I don't like what I'm hearing at all.

Götting: Well, there have, in fact, been a few differences of opinion in the last couple of days but... I've got everything under control. Just the normal school madness, if you know what I mean.

Dr. Wendtland: Is it true that one of your students wanted to take her own life yesterday?

Götting: Well, take her own life…that sounds so dramatic. There was a small incident...but nothing happened. I was able to diffuse the situation quickly and Sophie Klein is alright.

Dr. Wendtland: You were able to diffuse the situation.

Götting: Yes. Fortunately. Herr Wendtland, you know how students are at that age. You convince yourself of lots of stuff and succumb to your weltschmerz/melancholy.

Dr. Wendtland: Herr Götting, I get the impression that you don't take things seriously enough.

Götting: But of course I take things seriously enough.

Dr. Wendtland: Then please tell me what this strike is all about.

Götting: The strike?

Dr. Wendtland: The strike.

Götting: A...small group of students apparently didn't agree with how I structured the lessons.

Dr. Wendtland: You arranged tests that were supposed to divide the students...into being worthy of being promoted and not worthy.

Götting: I...ähm...subjected the students to an achievement test, that's true. But that's common practice at comprehensive schools.

Dr. Wendtland: Yeah, I understand. Herr Götting, I've ordered an investigation that is supposed to clear up the incidents at the Pestalozzi School. And should it turn out that you are overstepping your jurisdiction, there will be consequences.

Götting: Herr Wendtland, aren't you overreacting a little?

Dr. Wendtland: I haven't forgotten about the blackmail that got you this position as principal. I don't like your methods. And I wouldn't regret it for one moment if I had to replace you. Oh, and regarding Sophie Klein and her suicide attempt...I hope you gave thanks to your colleague Heisig...for diffusing the situation. Good day.

[Klein home]

Frau Klein: I really have to ask you to leave because I want to go see my daughter in the hospital. And before that I have to...

There's a banging noise from the pipes.

Michael: What is that noise?

Frau Klein: Oh tha... I've got tradesmen working in the house and I really should see to them.

Michael: Tradesmen?

Frau Klein: Yes, tradesmen. Please...would you now please...

Michael: Frau Klein, I know that you know where Jens Mirbach is. And I will find him...even without your help.

He leaves. We hear some more banging noises. Frau Klein pulls open a drawer and takes out a gun. Then she walks down to the basement where Jens Mirbach is gagged and chained (or more like cable tied) to the pipe of a radiator.

Frau Klein: What are you doing?! Quiet! Nobody is going to hear you down here anyway.

She puts more cable ties around his wrists and then pulls off the tape covering his mouth.

Mirbach: What you're doing here is rubbish. It doesn't help either of us. Let's talk. The blackmail was a mistake...

Frau Klein: Yes. Yes yes yes yes.

And she gags him again.

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Hotte: Imagine if she had really jumped.

Timo: God, Hotte!

Hotte: What?

Timo: Well, you don't have to imagine that on top of everything. It was bad enough that Sophie was standing up there yesterday, wasn't it? Psh…

Hotte: Still, can you imagine...

Timo: God! You're really a freak sometimes. Can't you just keep your mouth shut for once?

Hotte: Sorry.

Emma walks up….

Timo: Hey.

Emma: Hey. I've just been to the school office...for the class schedule. And Frau Jäger showed me this.

She holds out a letter from Stage Entertainment.

Timo: That's from Sister Act. About the audition.

Hotte: How cool!

Emma: No, not cool. Because Götting said that we would not participate.

Hotte: Why that?!

Timo: Well, because he doesn't like us.

Emma: Mainly because the STAG doesn't formally exist at the moment.

Timo: Well, and as long as Frau Vogel is still in prison it's going to stay like that.

Hotte: Imagine if she has to stay in prison. Forever.

Timo: Oh...

Emma: And where is Luzi, anyway?

[Pestalozzi, Götting's office]

Luzi is just about to walk straight into Götting's office….. she takes a deep breath and walks in…

Götting: Fräulein Beschenko. Usually people knock.

Luzi: You can stuff your blackmail. I don't want to go to England anymore.

Götting: You don't want to go to England anymore.

Luzi: No. I'm staying her, even if you don't like it. I know what you think of me, which is nothing, but I'm afraid you'll have to put up with me for a while longer yet.

Götting: Fräulein Beschenko, you don't need to give such a dramatic performance here. I've never been keen to write you a letter of recommendation for Liverpool. I only would have done it in return for your help. That was our deal.

Luzi: Yes. That's right. The deal. That was the other thing I wanted to tell you. Because of you I betrayed my friends and it was a huge mistake. And...just so you know. If there is ever another strike, you'll have to find another idiot to get on your side, and maybe there are still a few daft people out there who you could intimidate, but you'd better hurry because that number is dwindling rapidly.

Götting: I wouldn't stick my neck out so far if I were you.

Luzi: But you aren't me. You're the new interim principal...who is hated by everyone. And I'm the student who, unfortunately, won't give in to blackmail.

Götting: Fine. I take note of your decision but you do realize that if you stay you'll have to submit to the learning conditions at this school. Is that something you can afford?

Luzi: I'll manage somehow. I'd rather go jobbing after school than owe you anything.

Götting: Oh, Fräulein Beschenko? The matter of the music school in England really doesn't need to be spread around, right?

Luzi: Of course. Unfortunately, it's too late. It's already on the net. Oh...have a nice day.

[Klein home]

Michael is breaking and entering and thus furthering his criminal repertoire. He hears noises (aka Jens's muffled screams) from the basement and follows them down.

Frau Klein: Stop making so much noise.

Frau Klein pulls off the tape again.

Mirbach: This won’t do you any good. They'll find me and then they'll take you with them and lock you up.

Frau Klein: Quiet!

Mirbach: Frau Klein...Monika. This is madness. And you know that. You don't want to do this. Please...release me and we'll find a solution to the problem together...

Frau Klein is doing her best to improve her gagging technique and now tries to stuff some cloth into his mouth and then tape it shut.

That's when Michael makes his heroic move.

Michael: What's going on here?

(What's it look like to you? A 'Fifty Shades of Grey' reenactment?)

Mirbach: You'll have to help me. This woman is insane.

Michael: Frau Klein...

Frau Klein pulls the gun and aims it at Michael.(I can't really say I disapprove.)

Frau Klein: Not one step further.

Michael: Frau Klein...

Frau Klein: Not one step further, I said.

Mirbach: Monika...

[Prison, Bea's cell]

Bea is dreaming. In Flashbacks.

Father Lohmann: Murderer!

Sex with Ben.

Ben: Just go.

Father Lohmann: She...she...but she...she has...

Alexandra: Calm down, Papa.

[Klein home, basement]

Michael: Give me the gun. Give me the gun and we can talk about everything calmly.

Frau Klein: It's too late now anyway.

Michael: No, nothing is too late. Come on, we can do this, no matter what has happened.

Frau Klein: You shouldn't have come back, Herr Heisig.

Michael: But I'm here now and believe me, everything will be alright.

Frau Klein: Everything won't be alright. You saw too much.

[Prison, Bea's cell]

Bea: You're the only one who still believes me.

Michael: I know.

[Klein home, basement]

Mirbach: Take the gun away from her. She won't shoot.

Frau Klein: Quiet! You're the whole problem here. If you hadn't come back, everything would be alright. You ruined everything back then! Everything!

Mirbach: You have to get me out of here. I can tell the police what really happened to Franziska Lohmann back then.

Frau Klein: Quiet!

Frau Klein turns her back on Michael to shout at Mirbach while pointing the gun at him. With the gun pointed at someone who isn't him, Michael decides it's a good idea to rush Frau Klein. Unfortunately for him (but not for Jens Mirbach), she turns around again just as he is about to reach her.

Bang! (Ooops.)

[Prison, Bea's cell]

Bea wakes up in a panic.

Bea: Michael...

[Klein home, basement]

Mirbach and Frau Klein are staring Michael who is lying on the floor, unconscious.
