Emma: She’s constantly manipulating and…and lying.
Timo: But why do you care?
Emma: I just do.
Luzi: But still, Caro isn’t worth getting ones hands dirty over.
Emma: I was so scared that you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me anymore and then…then Caro said all this nasty stuff…
Jenny: Emma…
Emma: But that’s nonsense, isn’t it? You didn’t sleep with Ben.
Jenny: Yes. I did.
Intro
[Pestalozzi, auditorium]
Jenny: We had sex. But…it didn’t mean anything. It just happened.
Emma: I thought…you weren’t into boys.
Jenny: I’m not… not really. Emma, I’m into you. I just didn’t think that things between us would ever work out. But then I got your cards. I feel the same as you.
Emma takes the postcards out of Jenny's hand.
Emma: What I wrote… forget it. I was wrong.
Emma starts to walk away and throws the cards to the floor.
Jenny: Emma!
Emma: You totally played me for a sucker. It was just a game to you. A fucking game!
Jenny: No, it wasn’t!
Emma: Leave me alone. I don’t believe a word you say anymore.
And Emma storms out.
[Bergmann villa]
Karin sets about cleaning the knives in the kitchen. (As she is still rather angry, I'd be careful if I were Stefan.)
Stefan: I know it was rather unfortunate to offer you money for Ben’s…well, let’s say accommodations.
Karin: Unfortunate is right. Of course I won’t let anyone pay me for letting a school friend of my daughter’s stay in our home for a while.
Stefan: Well, pay, that doesn’t sound very nice, and I didn’t mean it like that. You completely misunderstood.
Karin: And how else am I supposed to have understood it? You waved around a 500 EUR bill.
Stefan: Yes, but we both know how hard it is to keep Ben fed. Besides, as the father I’m responsible for his child support.
Karin: It was Ben’s decision to move out of here. And don’t worry, I’ll be able to keep your son fed.
Stefan: He likes you. And with good reason. You…you’re a great mother. You know, he misses his own...very much. You were in a similar situation with Luzi once. How did you manage to make it right again? I mean to get closer again? Come on, Frau Beschenko. I could really use the advice of a story-book mother right about now. And if you don’t want to accept the child support for Ben, at least let me raise your wages a little. Let’s call it a parenting-advice bonus.
[Pestalozzi, school office]
Frau Jäger is arranging some flowers when she notices Michael.
Frau Jäger: Mr. Principal.
Michael: Hah, Ingrid. That’s still Herr Heisig to you. That’s enough. I’m only the interim principal.
Frau Jäger: Yes, unfortunately. If it were up to me, you would be interim principal forever.
Michael: And if you were my student I would throw this sentence back at you. It is rather illogical.
Frau Jäger: But fortunately I don't have to take tests in your class.
Michael: That's right. But...in crafting and needlework you'd get a clean 1 (A) from me.
Frau Jäger: Do you like it?
Michael: That's what I was trying to say.
Frau Jäger: And I just wanted to hear it again. Could you promise me one thing? If the new principal isn't at least half as nice as you, you will take over again as interim boss? Promise?
Michael: Promise. But I’d like to think that we all will get along well with the new principal.
Frau Jäger: So do you know this Frau Schmidt?
Michael: Äh...Schmidt?
Frau Jäger: Yes, that's the name of the new interim boss.
Michael: Do you know her first name as well?
Frau Jäger: No, Herr Götting only mentioned her last name once. Frau Schmidt.
Michael: Schmidt, and nothing else?
Frau Jäger: Only Schmidt. Why are you asking? Do you know her after all?
Michael: Äh no. Nowadays every other teacher is named Schmidt. During my school years I had three of those...and the janitor, but him with a double t. But never mind, Ingrid, see you later.
He takes out his phone.
Michael: (on the phone) Hi, this is Michael. Call me back at once, please.
[Saal 1]
Helena and Bea are sitting at the bar having their first date.
Helena: I'm glad that you could find the time to accompany me on such short notice. As long as my office isn't finished yet, I just find this a much more pleasant location.
Bea: It's a good choice. The coffee is much better too. And the service...may I present...this is my sister-in-law and best friend, Miriam Vogel.
(My my, already introducing her to the family.)
Helena: Nice to meet you. Helena Schmidt, the new principal.
Miriam: Hello, nice to meet you. What can I get you?
Helena: I'll take a latte macchiato with an extra dash of espresso, please.
Miriam: Very well. Won’t be but a minute.
(Let the flirting begin.)
Helena: So tell me, what's in store for me at the Pestalozzi School?
Bea: What is it you want to know?
Helena: Everything that happened in the last few months. Only the interesting stuff, of course.
Bea: Okay...how much time do you have?
Some intense eye-contact, laughter and coffees later...
Bea: And then we performed in Hamburg in the Sister Act musical.
Helena: Yes, I've already heard about that. Your AG really seems to be something special. Congratulations.
Bea: Oh yes, it is, thanks to the students. They really have a lot of talent.
Helena: A group is only ever as good as their leader. (Compliment her. Check!)
Bea: I am of course glad that Götting's two-class system was abolished.
Helena: Absurd. Elite students, A and B classes...It seems as if our colleague obviously highlighted the wrong passages during his studies of history.
Bea: Absolutely. So I'm even gladder that now we have someone at the Pestalozzi again whose only priority are the students.
Helena: How can you be so sure? I will, of course, do my best to run the school again in the spirit it had been formerly run. And concerning your AG, you'll get all the support from me that you need, of course. On one condition... there's no way I'm going to sing. That would be a catastrophe for all involved.
[Bergmann villa]
Karin: I don't want any additional money from you. Not for Ben's food, not for some kind of parenting advice, not for anything.
Stefan: But I just want to show my gratitude.
Karin: You really believe that money can buy you everything, don't you?
Stefan: I know that's how it is. Or do you think it's coincidence that I made it this far?
Karin: No. That's no coincidence, unfortunately.
Stefan: It is a credit to you that apparently you don't care about money at all. But that doesn't give you the right to judge someone who achieved something that you don't know anything about.
Karin: But I can judge how you're treating Ben.
Stefan: Do I get my parenting tip now, after all?
Karin: Yes. And even for free.
Stefan: You can't prohibit me from paying you at least one hour of overtime. And you don't have to act all high and mighty. I know how much you need the money.
Karin: You don't know anything. You will never stop wanting to buy everyone with your money. But that's not the worst thing. The worst is what you did to Ben. Getting his girlfriend pregnant and then letting him take responsibility. And then he thought that Caro had lost the child because of him...and you didn't say anything. Not one word. You were simply glad that she had actually had an abortion! And you're honestly asking me why Ben doesn't want to live here? Because his father isn't a father...but his biggest enemy!
Stefan: For money I probably would have only gotten the whitewashed truth. You are right...about everything. But do you think I wanted it all to happen this way?
[Pestalozzi, school toilet]
Jenny enters the room and sees Emma’s shoes in one of the stalls.
Jenny: Emma, I know that you're in there. Please, come out. Okay, then I'll just stay here too. God, Emma, this thing with Ben didn't mean anything. I was just so down because things went so
fucking awry with us. So I went partying with him...and drank too much...so I wouldn’t have to think about you all the time. Idiotic, isn't it?
Hey... I know...this might sound really weird but...hopping in bed with a guy is completely meaningless. Emma, I never would have started anything with another woman. I couldn’t have done it...because of you, you know? What I'm trying to say, Emma...since we've been avoiding each other, I haven’t been able to get my act together at all. I want to wait tables with you again...and hang up banners…invoke the spirits...share woolen blankets... Emma, I want to do anything with you, as long as we’re together. Emma, I just can't imagine life without you anymore.
[Saal 1]
Bea: I still haven't really taken it all in. I can't believe that the murder of Franziska Lohmann has finally been solved.
Helena: Unbelievable. But I'm glad that everything turned out well in the end.
Bea: Me too. When they arrested me, I thought ‘that’s it’.
Helena: I can imagine. No. I can't really. Sitting innocently in jail. Frau Vogel, that's just...inconceivable. And then to have your ex-boyfriend testifying against you...
Bea: Yes. But luckily, my current boyfriend is almost a real hero. No, he is a hero. Without him I would still be in there.
Helena: And does your hero also have a name? You've only been talking about your boyfriend. You normally only do that if there are problems or if it's all very new.
Bea: Luckily, the latter. He is a colleague.
Helena: Ah, I understand. But don't worry. The new principal has nothing against colleagues being a couple. (Heh! Just in case you were wondering about my receptiveness to a pass from you.) I myself was married to one. (Hint hint. Past tense. I’m single.)
Bea: Yes, that could happen to me too. He plans to propose.
Helena chokes on her water.
Bea: Everything alright?
Helena: Yes, I'm sorry. (I just didn't realize how close I might be to losing you.) Well...I wanted to say, how romantic. Then there's nothing standing in the way of your happily ever after.
Bea: He hasn't asked me yet.
Helena: Then don't forget to look surprised. Just some advice from one woman to another.
They chuckle. Helena looks at her watch.
Helena: Well, we have lost track of time talking. I have to get back to the school. Bye. See you later.
Bea: Later.
[Pestalozzi, school toilet]
Jenny: Emma...
Emma comes storming out of the stall.
Emma: No. No Emma. What's with this whole production and this ...this drivel !? If you supposedly fell so madly in love with me, why then did you get it on with the guy of all guys. I don't get it!
Jenny: But Emma, I explained it to you!
Emma: No, you didn't explain anything! Except bullshitting me from the beginning! Do you even realize...that I...that I was really this close to outing myself? Ey, luckily I didn't do it.
So? Was your experiment successful? Can I get little Emma to believe that she's into women? Yes, you succeeded. Congrats!
Jenny: It wasn't an experiment!
Emma: Go away. Or you know something? Stay. I'm going. And don’t you dare follow me.
[Bergmann villa]
Stefan: Even though I don’t always show it...Ben is important to me. Very important, even.
Karin: To be honest, one hardly notices that. I think...you should make this clearer, especially to Ben.
Stefan: Well...the question is how?
Karin: I'm afraid one talk won't be enough to work through the last few years.
Stefan: I know.
Karin: If you really want my advice as a story-book mother, don't pressure Ben so hard anymore. At the moment, after everything that happened...you probably don't have any other choice anyway than to just give him time. That way he can also calm down. Without that no useful talk will take place.
Stefan: Thank you.
Karin: You'll have my bill by the end of the day.
Stefan: You won’t get one cent from me. I got it. But you do realize that you were rather impertinent? Well…maybe that was necessary for once.
Karin: Looks like it, yes.
Stefan: But next time, you’re fired.
Karin: Oh damn, I’ve got to go.
She reaches for Stefan's mug at the same time he does. Their hands touch and they look at each other. (My Karin/Stefan shipper heart goes squee! Damn that Helena for not concentrating all of her charms on Bea.)
Karin: Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll just clean this up quickly.
Stefan: No no. Leave it.
Karin: Really?
Stefan: Yes. I’ll do it.
Karin: Okay. Thanks. See you.
Stefan: See you.
[Beschenko home, kitchen]
Ben: I can go into the other room if you'd prefer.
Luzi: You can stay. Ähm, did my mother say when she would be home?
Ben: I think she’s at my father’s today. So it could be a while. I really feel bad sometimes because she has to let herself be ordered around by him all day.
Luzi: Oh come on, it’s not that bad. I mean, he treats her okay most of the time. I believe that you’re really super important to your father. He just isn’t able to…show it.
Ben: Yeah, and we better talk about something else.
Luzi: About Jenny perhaps?
Ben: Why are all of you going on about Jenny all of a sudden? Jeez, we had some fun, so where’s the problem? Now don’t look at me like that. It’s not the first time I’ve done something like this, is it?
Luzi: Well, I know that, Ben. But is she as casual about it as you are?
Ben: Yes! Jenny isn’t interested in me and I’m not interested in Jenny. Two people frustrated by love sometimes just do what is the most fun.
Luzi: So she told you that she was love sick?
Ben: No, not directly. But she’s definitely unhappily in love. But not with me.
Luzi: No…definitely not.
Ben: What is that supposed to mean?
Luzi: Nothing. Just keep buttering your bread.
[Pestalozzi, auditorium]
Bea: So anyway, the new principal assured me that she plans on supporting our AG.
Timo: Cool.
Luzi: We shouldn’t rejoice too soon. A lot of crap has happened in this joint lately.
Bea: Okaaay.... In the face of this much enthusiasm I suggest we get started. Emma, how about it? Sweet Dreams once more? Alright.
And Emma/Kasia kills Sweet Dreams.
[Bergmann villa]
Meanwhile Jenny is reading Emma's cards. And shedding a few tears.
[Beschenko home]
Karin: Hello.
Ben: Hey. Äh, did the ruler of the world give you a day pass?
Karin: Ben. I understand that you're mad at your father. I can understand it very well. What he did isn't easy to forgive, but despite it all he’s hurting because of your fight, too.
Ben: Sure. Did he confide in you about that during conversational therapy?
Karin: I've known your father now for a while too and I can see that he is unhappy because of it.
Ben: Well, it's his own fault.
Karin: Yes. And I believe that’s finally dawning on him too.
Ben: But we're still talking about the same Stefan Bergmann? My father and self-criticism? (He laughs) No way.
Karin: Now you're doing the same thing you're always accusing him of. You label him and don't give him a chance to maybe behave differently.
Ben: Incredible. You're even championing guys like my father. You're too good for this world.
Karin: Ben. He is your father. Maybe not a good one but... the only one you've got.
[Pestalozzi, teachers' hallway]
Bea: Hey. Soon-to-be-ex-principal. Do you already have plans for tonight?
Michael: Hi.
Bea: Hi?
Michael: Hi.
Bea: Are you okay? Or are you regretting that you're no longer the principal after all?
Michael: Does it look like that?
Bea: I already met your successor, by the way.
Michael: Really?
Bea: Yes.
Michael: Mhm.
Bea: She's nice. You'll like her. You'll meet her soon.
Michael: Yes.
Bea: Have I already told you that I love you?
Michael: Have I... Äh yes, you did just now.
Bea: Well, if we didn't have to go in there, then...
Michael: Bea...
Bea: Now, come on.
[Pestalozzi, teachers' lounge]
Götting: Here comes our pedagogical dream couple. I'm giving that young love…hmmm…about one more minute.
Herr Wendtland: Good day, everyone. Don't worry, I'll make it brief. First of all I would like to thank Mr. Heisig for taking over as provisional, but very professional, principal of the Pestalozzi Comprehensive School on such short notice. And as coincidence would have it, you all won't have to get used to a new name. You could say the position is staying in the family. May I present your new principal… Welcome...Helena Schmidt-Heisig.
Applause
Bea: Are you related in some way?
Michael: That's my wife.
