[Previously on Hand aufs Herz]

translated by lifescrazes, edited by amidola

Sophie: [at the phone] I want to go to Sydney. Sydney, yes. Yeah, my traveling passport... I'll look for it, totally forgot about that. [to Caro] Shit! The passport is at home, I didn't plan this!

Caro: Then you've got to go and get it.

[Sophie leaves the house, locks the door and drops the passport. Turning the corner, she suddenly faces Bea and Michael]

Bea: Sophie!

[They all stare at each other]

[Opening]

[Caro and Frau Klein at Saal Eins]

Caro: Don't worry! I'm sure Sophie will get in contact with you soon!

Frau Klein: But what if Jens... if the kidnapper doesn't even plan on releasing her?!

Caro: He's got the money now. He'll surely want to hide that first.

Frau Klein: I want my daughter back. What if she's lying around somewhere? If he did anything to her?

Caro: Nothing bad will have happened, he wouldn't want to dirty his hands any more than he already has.

[Frau Klein takes out her phone]

Caro: What are you doing?

Frau Klein: I'm calling the police.

Caro: No! I wouldn't put Sophie in any more danger!

Frau Klein: [hangs up] I'm losing my head. I can't do this anymore.

[At the Klein's house]

Bea: What are you doing here?

Michael: Does your mother know you're here?  (Who else is singing Abba now?/Chiquitita,tell me what's wrong....sorry,wrong song..but you asked!)

Bea: Are you okay? Is everything alright? [looks at the passport] What do you want with  the  passport?

Michael: And those bags?

[Sophie just stares at them for a little while longer and then runs away]

Bea & Michael: Sophie!!

Michael: Hey!

Bea: Sophie!

Michael: Sophie!

[Back at Saal Eins]

Frau Klein: [picks up her phone] Herr Heisig?! At home? Yeah? She's okay, yeah? I'll be right there. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. [hangs up, to Caro] Herr Heisig and Frau Vogel found Sophie! She's okay.

Caro: Okay, but what... uh...

Frau Klein: Great! God! She's fine!! [runs off] (I'm so grateful Heisig and Bea saw her, poor Mrs.Klein!)

[In Frau Krawcyk's office, she's busy with paperwork; a knock on the door]

Frau Krawcyk: Yes, please?

Frau Jäger: [comes in with a tray, on it tea and cake; she closes the door behind her] I just made some tea and thought... maybe you'd want some, too.

Frau Krawcyk: Thank you, that's very kind. And what's that other thing? Are you trying to prevent me from getting in my pants at all? (O_O Sorry, but your editor just read that in a completely wrong way...and I'm not going to edit it...”Fitting into” is what they're talking about..I hope.)

Frau Jäger: That's comfort food, it won't put on any weight.

Frau Krawcyk: You're right. My pants really are the smallest of problems right now.

Frau Jäger: The one with Sophie will surely be alright.

Frau Krawcyk: That would save all of us a lot of problems. [looks at a letter, directed to Dr. Wendtland]

Frau Jäger: Shall I take that with me?

Frau Krawcyk: Thanks, but it can wait. Thanks.

Frau Jäger: Yeah... [she leaves]

[Frau Klein enters her house, Bea and Michael right behind her]

Frau Klein: Thank you for waiting.

Bea: That goes without saying, Frau Klein.

Frau Klein: Please. Sit down. [they all do]

Michael: Thanks.

Frau Klein: And Sophie really was fine?

Michael: Well, judging by the way she ran away, she was top fit.

Bea: Do you have an explanation? Why did Sophie run away from us?

Michael: Why did she run away from us with a passport in her hand?

Frau Klein: She held a passport in her hand?

Michael: Yes.

Bea: Yes, she quite obviously wanted to travel somewhere... Do you maybe know, where to?(Not insie of the EU (European Union),or she wouldn't have needed a passport...they're teachers, not sleuths, obviously..)

Frau Klein: No idea, it's the middle of the school year!

Michael: That's weird though, isn't it? First your daughter disappears, then she reappears and disappears again, but this time she's got a passport.

Frau Klein: Maybe she was forced to – uh... Umm... Maybe... Yeah, maybe she was forced to do that. [laughs nervously, a tear in her eye]

Bea: Frau Klein... Did anything happen? Something you haven't told us yet?

Michael: If you don't tell us what happened, we can't help you.

Frau Klein: [with some more tears] Sophie was kidnapped. I paid 20.000€ ransom for her to be set free.

Bea: Did you inform the police?

Frau Klein: Caro delivered the money exactly as discussed

Bea: Caro?

Michael: Caro Eichkamp?

Bea: She delivered the ransom?

Frau Klein: Yeah. She was at my side all along and supported me.

[in the basement, Caro's coming down the steps]

Caro: Good, you're still here!

Sophie: Everything okay?

Caro: No! Why don't you answer your phone?

Sophie: Because the power was used up! Herr Heisig and Frau Vogel saw me!

Caro: Yeah, I know! I was there when they called your mother!

Sophie: Of course the two of them would have to report that right away. [starts gathering her stuff]

Caro: So, did you get the passport?

Sophie: Yes. I almost passed out when they were suddenly right in front of me.

Caro: And then?

Sophie: I just ran away.

Caro: Well done. You've got to get to the airport as soon as possible, before they alarm them there.

Sophie: Okay, I'm all set.

[They hug]

Caro: I wish you all the best of luck!

Sophie: For you too.

Caro: And take care!

Sophie: Hey, will you be all right? I mean, they are going to ask you, too.

Caro: So? I will just keep the kidnapping story up!

Sophie: And what about that? [looks at Caro's belly]

Caro: When you come back, everything is going be as it used to be.

Sophie: So much shit can happen in your life.

Caro: But we've got everything under control. And say hi to Australia from me. And if you find your brother, tell him hi, too, or your sister. Now get out of here.

Sophie: See you soon. [starts to leave, but turns just before the steps] And... thanks... for everything.

(Aww, I want the two of them as a duo back!)

[At school, Luzi, Hotte and Emma are looking at some papers; Jenny joins them]

Jenny: So? You got my report?

Emma: [gives it to her] Here you go. Even though I think this is out of proportion.

Jenny: You wanted a séance, you got a séance.

Emma: Yeah, a séance that brought us the earth-shattering message of “Doctor Mops is red”

Jenny: Deal is deal.

Luzi: Yeah, fine, you're done? I would like to continue rehearsing that song for the radio.

Jenny: You're doing a song for the radio?

Luzi: It's some competition from the ministry of culture. They're producing an ad against bullying. Everyone can take part..

Emma: And you can win 10.000€ for your school.

Jenny: Sounds good. [the bell rings] But there surely is some fierce competition, huh?! Well, I will dedicate myself to the exigencies of everyday life now and hold my report.

Emma: Don't you want to at least look at it beforehand?

Jenny: I'm pretty good at reading.

Hotte: Good luck!

Jenny: No need. [looks at the folder] I got this.  Thanks.

[Ben's running down the stairs, Caro just enters the school, only to be held up by Ben]

Ben: Hey! Wait, wait! Did you hear, see or whatever from Sophie?

Caro: Sorry. But I got to get to French, I'm already running late.

Ben: Wait for just a second! Okay, if you do happen to see her, tell her Timo knows it. And he's got to tell her something important.

Caro: So?

Ben: Don't tell me you don't know. Gee, Sophie's pregnant. Timo thinks that's why she ran away.

Caro: Oh...

Ben: Yes, oh! Really, if you see her. Timo's got to talk to her, don't let her do anything stupid, okay?!

Caro: He would want to have that baby with her.

Ben: Yes, of course. Timo is okay, he'll take care of the child. He won't leave her hanging.

[Flashback]

Stefan: Get an appointment with a gynaecologist and get rid of it. That's no big deal anymore nowadays, you can do it. And Caro... I like you. That's why I'll give you some advice. Don't mess with me..

[End of Flashback]

Caro: Yeah, I'll tell her when I see her. I mean, if she shows up again and I meet her, then... I'm going to tell her about this...

Ben: Alright. Have fun with French. [He runs off]

[At the Bergmann house, Stefan walks in]

Stefan: Hello, Frau Beschenko.

Karin: [setting the table] Hello, Herr Bergmann. Did you have a pleasant journey?

Stefan: Yes, thanks. Tell me, did anything important happen in my absence? [checks the mail]

Karin: Just a few calls. But I wrote everything down for you. I made something to eat for Ben and Jenny. Do you want something, too?

Stefan: No thanks, I ate on the plane. Did that girl from Ben's class show up again?

Karin: No. But it seems to have been no crime.

Stefan: How do they know?

Karin: She apparently ran away.

Stefan: Oh, problems with the family, hu?!

Karin: No, she's pregnant... they suppose. They found pregnancy tests at school.

[Flashback]

Caro: I am pregnant.

Stefan: You can't be serious.

Caro: Sadly, I am

Stefan: Why isn't he here?

Caro: Who?

Stefan: Why, Ben of course

Caro: Ben isn't the father. You got me pregnant.

[End of Flashback]

Karin: Well, anyways, the others are hoping she'll get in touch again, soon. I'll get back to dinner now or was there something else?

Stefan: No. Make something for me too, it'll be a while until Ben comes back.

Karin: Okay.

[In class, Jenny is in front of it with Herr Götting; “Martin Luther King” is projected onto the wall; Emma is texting]

Herr Götting: Well, Jennifer,(Huh?Shock!) we are all curious about what you can tell us about today's topic.

Jenny: Alright. Today it's about an important man whom all of you surely have heard about already. A man who changed the world – for the better … Which you can't really say about a lot of men. Martin Luther was born November 10th, 1483, in Eisleben. He was the theological teacher of the Protestant Reformation.

Herr Götting: Frau Hartmann, I really appreciate you going that far back but we haven't got the time for that. So if you could please concentrate on your topic, which is Martin Luther King.

Jenny: [clears her throat] Yes. [Emma looks up, realizing her mistake] Well, um... Martin Luther, the great reformer... was um... was the name giver of one of the … greatest reformers... um... civil-rights activists of the USA... Martin Luther, as an to the Augustinian monkhood associated theologic professor, followed Jesus Christ as the incarnation of the Word of God.

Herr Götting: Did I not express myself clearly enough? [Jenny shakes her head] When was Martin Luther King born?

Jenny: Um... [looks at Emma who shrugs sheepishly] Nineteen...fifty?

Herr Götting: May I? [Taking the folder, running over the pages] Well, this all seems very well-founded, but sadly on the wrong topic.

Jenny: I'm sorry, I... I apparently got something mixed up

Herr Götting: Yeah, well, I'm sorry, too, zero points, sit down.

Jenny: But – something like that can happen

Herr Götting: Of course. But please not in my lesson

Jenny: Maybe you should have just expressed yourself more clearly

[Emma wishes the ground would swallow her up]

Herr Götting: Maybe debating is much appreciated in Oxford and London but in my lessons, efficiency counts and now sit down. [Jenny sits down, throwing an angry look at Emma, who looks really sorry] So, who of you can tell me something about Martin Luther King?

[Caro puts an envelope in her locker, just for Michael to take it right out again]

Michael: May I please?

Caro: [trying to grab it] What the hell, that's mine! [Michael hands it to Bea, who opens it] You don't have the right to just -

[looking inside, Michael whistles; Bea gets out a handful of money]

Bea: Caro, how did you get to so much money?

Caro: That's none of your business, may I now get -

Michael: The money is confiscated for now. [Bea puts it back in the envelope]

Caro: Excuse me, that is theft! Do I need to call the police now?(Yes! You're of age, they're your teachers, and even if these were a package of snickers and you extremely obese,  they'd still have no business “confiscating” your stuff!WTH!)

Michael: Yeah, go ahead. Then the colleagues can clarify if this money is somehow related to Sophie's kidnapping.

Bea: I'd suggest we talk calmly

Caro: Alright. I got nothing to hide.

Michael: Okay, let's go to the counseling room

[Caro shuts the locker]

[Jenny storms out of class, Emma on her heels]

Emma: [apologetically] Jenny! Wait! I didn't mean to do that!

Jenny: [mad] Come on!

Emma: Really, I am so sorry! I have no idea how that could have happened! If I can make up for that somehow, then -

Jenny: [turning to face her] Of course you had to mess that up for me! [giving Emma the folder back and storming off]

Emma: That wasn't on... purpose...

[In Frau Krawcyk's office]

Herr Götting: We need a new burner for the heating system, no later than next autumn.

Frau Krawcyk: Yes, I know. And outside of the school, the rendering's crumbling and the gym needs a new floor...

Herr Götting: I can take over the applications for you, if you'd like.

Frau Krawcyk: Well then. I won't be standing in your way.. regarding those applications to the education authority... [handing him the pages]

Herr Götting: Do you already have a reaction to the disappearing of Sophie Klein, by the way?

Frau Krawcyk: No.

Herr Götting: But... you gave notice?

Frau Krawcyk: [looking extremely guilty] Of course.

Herr Götting: I mean, that is not something you should keep to yourself. [Frau Krawcyk puts a folder on top of the letter] Two teachers breached their duty of supervision during a school trip, it could be relevant under employment law. Maybe it could become an insured event, which we hope it won't of course.

Frau Krawcyk: Thanks for the lecture, Herr Götting. As I can see, you did your homework, but I haven't been  in this job since just yesterday, either.

Herr Götting: Well then... [gets up] It surely isn't pleasant when something like that happens twice in your tenure.

Frau Krawcyk: The cases of Franciska Lohmann and Sophie Klein are not to be compared.

Herr Götting: I hope so. Especially in your interest.

Frau Krawcyk: Of course.

Herr Götting: And then there is so much private stuff you're struggling with.

Frau Krawcyk: Thank you for your compassion, Herr Götting. But I can cope with my private matters alone... as well as with everything else.

Herr Götting: If there is anything else I can do for you...

Frau Krawcyk: Thanks, no...

Herr Götting: Frau Krawcyk... [leaves]

[Frau Krawcyk takes the letter]

[at the Bergmann's, Ben and Stefan sit at the table, Karin is in the back, Jenny comes in and sits with them]

Ben: Hey. Did you know that Martin Luther King lived 500 years ago?

Jenny: Very funny.

Karin: Did something happen? [sets something on the table]

Ben: Well, Jenny just thought Martin Luther was an African-American from Georgia.

Jenny: I just mixed up the topics, that's all.

Ben: But you worked so hard on that report!

Jenny: Change of subject, okay?!

Ben: Could be difficult, because you are the subject.

Stefan: Luckily you never mess up at school

Ben: I did. But that usually was on purpose.(Which makes it so much better, Mr. X and Mr.Y, Chromosome..)

[Jenny takes some Olivi- um, olives]

Stefan: And apart from that? Everything okay?

Ben: Yes. Why?

Stefan: Oh, just because. How's it going with Caro?

Ben: We've split.

Stefan: But she's well, yeah?

Ben: At least she won't be more miserable than I am, I guess.
Jenny: Well. She's eating like a hole and flagging out at training. [Stefan has a weird look] Don't you say that? Eating like a hole?

Stefan: Yeah...

Ben: That's one way of putting it.

Jenny: Well, anyways, the break up apparently didn't leave her completely untouched.(“Except of by me,harrumph”, (Jenny has been hitting on Caro in all manners of the book, really, she has..)

Stefan: But she didn't mention anything in particular?

Jenny: No...

Ben: Say... why are you suddenly so interested in Caro?

Stefan: I'm not. But it's allowed for me to be interested in your life, isn't it? Thanks.

Karin: Don't you want to eat after all?

Stefan: No. I still got lots of work left, I'll take care of that first.

[Money and Michael's hands on it, apparently they counted]

Michael: From your bank account?!

Caro: Is that forbidden now?
Bea: Come on, Caro! 10.000€ in your locker, that is way too risky!

Caro: I wanted to look at a car later, and I need the money for that, you know, if I want to buy it. I wouldn't take it with me all the time

Bea: Is that so? What kind of car?

Michael: From which dealer?

Caro: What do you want from me anyway?

Bea: We just think it's strange... Sophie's kidnapper gets 20.000€. And you have exactly half of that sum with you after you were to deliver the money!

Caro: Do you think I kidnapped Sophie now?

Michael: Maybe you worked together with Sophie...

Caro: Sure, Sophie kidnaps herself and together we blackmail her mother. Do you realize the way that sounds? Sounds really sick. [Michael picks up the phone and dials] What are you doing there?

Michael: I'm calling the police now.

Caro: Hang up. I'll tell you what happened.

[Michael hangs up]

[Götting at the vending machine, Frau Lohmann joins him]

Herr Götting: Hey, how's it looking? Chocolate bar in honor of the occasion?

Frau Lohmann: What are we celebrating?

Herr Götting: Two teachers breaching their duty of supervision and an alcoholic headmaster not reporting them.

Frau Lohmann: She wants to protect Bea. Just like back then.

Herr Götting: Only this time she'll be landing on her feet. (Isn't that good? Landing on your feet? For the one landing, that is.//I think Götting should get zero points for mixing his sayings up...)

[Frau Krawcyk is looking through her address book until she finds Dr. Wendtland; she takes the phone and dials, only to put the phone away again and eat cake instead//That is what my work day looks like, too!]

Herr Götting: When I was in her office, I already had a feeling something wasn't quite right. Here you are. [hands her the chocolate bar]

Frau Lohmann: And when you called the education authority, your suspicion was confirmed?

Herr Götting: Yes. Until today no notice about Sophie Klein's disappearance. Apparently, she's still hoping Sophie will show up in time.

Frau Lohmann: Aren't we all hoping so?

Herr Götting: Yes of course! But now Wendtland can't protect her anymore! That's the end of her as headmaster!

Michael: All that time you could see how scared Frau Klein was and faked the worried friend!

Caro: It wasn't like that. It was an emergency

Bea: What kind of emergency?
Michael: Caro, you are up to your ear's in doo-doo, you shouldn't play games anymore.

Caro: Sophie wanted to go away. Away from her mother, from school, from STAG, from everything here!

Bea: All that fuss for that?
Caro: Yeah, well, without money you don't come far!

Michael: How far did she want to go?

Caro: She didn't tell me. In case I get caught.

Michael: You do know you incurred a penalty with that?!

Caro: You're not pressing charges against me, are you?

Michael: You exploited your friend's state of emergency and that of her mother to enrich yourself, I don't think you'll get away with that!

Caro: I needed the money for myself, too...

Bea: Caro, are you in any kind of trouble?

Michael: What did you need that money for?

Caro: For an abortion.

Bea: You're pregnant? By whom?

Michael: You don't know by whom?

Caro: Of course I know. Ben.
